European Green Deal: Ukraine to Become a Member on October 6

Ukraine has expressed its readiness to join the European Green Deal, and the parties will officially confirm their interest in the deal on October 6 at the Ukraine-EU summit. In September, the government approved an interagency working group under the European Green Deal project.

The main subject of discussion this year was the future of Ukraine’s energy sector, its perspectives and development in the framework of EU’s Green Deal. The Energy Transition Coalition fully supports the decision to sign the agreement; yet, we are also deeply concerned about the fact that in response to the COVID-19 crisis, the Ukrainian government will withdraw from its low-carbon transition. For example, the draft national budget 2021 does not include the funding of the State Energy Efficiency Fund and other energy efficiency measures (including the so-called “warm loans”), while environmental protection measures are significantly underfunded. More information on problematic issues and priority subjects can be found in the coalition letter to First Vice President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans and Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Matti Maasikas.
