Костянтина Малицька портрет

Malytska is one of the most prominent Ukrainian women's movement activists, whose name is associated with fifty years of its history (1890-1940). A woman with excellent civic intuition, she always felt the needs of her time and successfully put them into action. Malytska was involved in significant events and achievements in women's history. She is the author of the first work on the history and conceptualization of Ukrainian feminism, “On the Women's Movement” (Lviv, 1904), one of the founders of the “Zhinocha hromada”(1909), “Soiuz Ukrainok” (1917), an organizer of the volunteer women's movement during the two world wars, the head of the “Soiuz Ukrainok”(1923-1924), and the organization «Zhinocha sluzhba Ukraini»(1941). As an educator of generations, she shaped a whole generation of leaders of the next wave of the women's movement.

Malytska was an authoritative teacher whose educational principles were based on national ideas and an understanding of child psychology. She devoted 45 years to working at school and reforming education. She taught in Halych, Luzhany in Bukovyna, and for the longest time in Lviv at the Taras Shevchenko Private Girls' School. At this institution, she founded the Hanna Barvinok Circle, which for many years became a powerful center of social life in Lviv, bringing together not only mothers of schoolchildren but all women.

On the eve of the First World War and during the Moscow occupation of Galicia, Malytska mobilized Galician women to help the front and the national resistance.

The “Fund for the Needs of Ukraine,” organized by her, became the basis for forming the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen. That is why Malytska is also called the mother of the Sich Riflemen.

The Russian occupiers considered her a dangerous nationalist. As a result, Malytska became a victim of the Moscow occupation regime, the only woman among 60 prominent male political figures in Lviv, who was arrested by the Russians in February 1915 and taken to Siberia. Malytskaka spent five years in exile in the Krasnoyarsk region, describing her exile experience in her memoir "On the Waves of World War".

*Zhinocha hromada- Ukrainian public women's organization. The organization's goal is to develop the national identity of Ukrainian women through the activities of educational clubs and courses
